Il Campitello is Monteraponi's oldest vineyard: a single plot at 420 meters, set apart from the other vines and surrounded only by forest. The vines are over 40 years old, and harvest and vinification are handled like a cru, separate from all the other wines of the estate.

A Riserva from a single old vineyard, for connoisseurs of Sangiovese and for anyone who likes to let a wine rest for a few years.

Taste & aroma

In the glass, a garnet red. The nose is intense with spice and red fruit, then herbs, broom, and fennel, very typical of Chianti Classico. On the palate it shows strength from the start; galestro and clay give it salinity and remarkably long persistence. The acidity stays high thanks to the altitude, and the tannins are fine yet pronounced.

The winery

Monteraponi is a medieval hamlet in Radda in Chianti, built around towers from the tenth century. Today the estate's bottles rest in the vaulted cellars beneath the tower. Of the 200 hectares only twelve are planted with vines; the rest is olive groves and centuries-old oak and chestnut forests. It is farmed organically, certified by ICEA.

In the cellar

Fermentation starts spontaneously, in glazed concrete tanks, without temperature control and without added yeast. It is followed by 30 to 35 days on the skins, with daily pump-overs and punch-downs by hand; malolactic fermentation is also spontaneous. The wine then ages at least 26 months in large oval oak casks and three months in concrete, where it clarifies on its own. It is bottled by gravity during a waning moon, unfiltered and unfined.

At the table

With typical Tuscan meat dishes, above all game. Open it ahead of time or decant it, and serve at 16 to 18 °C (61 to 64 °F). Its high acidity makes it long-lived: with good storage it keeps developing for many years.
