Tignanello 2022

Some wines are for drinking. Others have written the history of Italian wine. Tignanello belongs to the second category.

In 1971, this wine broke all the rules: it was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, and one of the first Tuscan red wines to include Cabernet and no white grapes. This breakthrough gave rise to an entire category: the Super Tuscan.

In the glass, it glows with an intense ruby red. The nose reveals cherry, ripe Morello cherry, and pomegranate, along with a hint of violet and fresh balsamic notes. On the palate, it is elegant and balanced: vibrant acidity, broad, silky tannins, and a long, persistent finish.

The winery

Tignanello comes from Marchesi Antinori, one of Italy's oldest winemaking families, whose history dates back to 1385: 26 generations dedicated to wine. The vines are located on the Tenuta Tignanello, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Yet Tignanello is a distinct entity: not a Chianti, but a Toscana IGT that has redefined Tuscany.

In the cellar

Each parcel is vinified separately and fermented on the skins in conical stainless steel tanks to preserve aromas and extract fine tannins. Malolactic fermentation takes place in small wooden barrels. The wine then ages for around 13 months in French and a small portion of Hungarian oak barriques, predominantly new, before the final blend is created. This is followed by approximately one year of bottle aging before release.

At the table

A wine for grand occasions: with Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised beef, game, or aged Pecorino cheese. Open or decant in good time and serve at 16 to 18 degrees Celsius.
