Baron'Ugo grows at the highest point of Monteraponi, at 570 meters, and is made only in great vintages.

A Sangiovese from Radda in Chianti, complemented by a little Canaiolo and Colorino, bottled as Toscana Rosso IGT.

Made only in great vintages, from Monteraponi's highest vineyard: a wine for collectors and for lovers of elegant Sangiovese.

Taste & aroma

In the glass, a very light red that brings to mind wines from north of the Alps: clear, luminous, with garnet reflections. On the nose depth and earth, then plenty of red fruit, cherry and currant, and a delicate scent of violet. On the palate elegant and fine, with rich, energetic acidity and carefully crafted tannins.

The winery

Monteraponi is a medieval hamlet in Radda in Chianti. At the end of the tenth century it belonged to Count Ugo, Margrave of Tuscany, who gave it to the abbey he had founded at Poggio Martori. Today the estate covers 200 hectares in an amphitheater open to the south, twelve of them vineyards, surrounded by ancient oak and chestnut forests. It is farmed organically, certified by ICEA.

In the vineyard

The vines are over 40 years old and grow in stony, calcareous soil full of alberese and galestro. Harvest and vinification are carried out separately from the other grapes, as with Il Campitello.

In the cellar

Spontaneous fermentation in glazed concrete tanks, without temperature control and without added yeast, then 30 to 35 days on the skins, with daily pump-overs and punch-downs by hand. The wine ages at least 36 months in large oval oak casks and three months in concrete before being bottled by gravity during a waning moon. Before release it rests a further six months in bottle, unfiltered and unfined.

At the table

With bistecca alla fiorentina, game, roast lamb, or pappardelle with game ragù, with truffle, and with aged Tuscan cheese. Open it ahead of time or decant it, and serve at 16 to 18 °C (61 to 64 °F). With good storage it keeps developing for many years.
