Bragantino is Monteraponi's first Gran Selezione and the estate's first single-varietal Sangiovese. The name is a pet name: it is what Michele Braganti was called in the family as a child.

The label shows a painting by Nino Tirinnanzi, a pupil of the Florentine painter Ottone Rosai; the painting is a favorite of Michele's father.

A small production from a young vineyard high above the hamlet of Monteraponi: a Sangiovese for collectors and for anyone who wants to discover a new side of Monteraponi.

Taste & aroma

First comes the fruit, sour cherry and raspberry, then it turns spicy: pepper, macchia herbs, a note of dried flowers. Beneath lies something stony, almost chalky, that comes from the alberese soil. On the palate taut and linear, carried by lively acidity; the tannin is fine but clearly perceptible.

The winery

Monteraponi is a medieval hamlet in Radda in Chianti, built around towers from the tenth century. The estate covers 200 hectares, twelve of them vineyards, surrounded by ancient oak and chestnut forests and farmed organically, certified by ICEA. It is run by Michele Braganti.

In the vineyard

The vineyard was planted in 2015 on virgin soil where olive trees once stood, directly above the hamlet and opposite the Baron'Ugo vineyard. It lies at about 560 meters, south-facing, with a slope of almost 50 percent. The vines come from cuttings of the Cepparello vineyard of Isole e Olena, propagated by the Guillaume nursery in Burgundy.

In the cellar

Fermentation starts spontaneously in concrete, without temperature control and without added yeast. The wine stays on the skins for about 40 days, pumped over by hand every day; malolactic fermentation also takes place in concrete. It then ages 42 months in oak and another eight months in bottle before it leaves the estate.

At the table

With bistecca alla fiorentina, roast lamb, or a slow-cooked ragù, with aged pecorino or Parmigiano. Open it ahead of time or decant it. With good storage it keeps developing for many years.
