Lupicaia is the top wine of Castello del Terriccio. Since its first vintage, 1993, critics have counted it among the great wines of Italy.

The name goes back to an old place name: the stream where wolves were once seen.

The flagship of Castello del Terriccio, around 30,000 bottles a year. For collectors, for special evenings, and as a gift that will be remembered.

Taste & aroma

In the glass, a brilliant ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose offers plenty of fruit, red and black currant and blackberry, then leather and tobacco, and finally herbal spice. On the palate very juicy, built around a large core of fruit, with fine, grippy tannins that will still benefit from more years in the bottle. The finish is long, fruity, and herbal-spicy.

The winery

Lupicaia comes from Castello del Terriccio in Castellina Marittima, on the northern edge of the Maremma, not far from Bolgheri. The estate covers around 1,500 hectares, 65 of them vineyards facing the sea: the light reaches the vines also as a reflection off the water. Terriccio owes its reputation as a winery to Gian Annibale Rossi di Medelana, who took it over in 1975. Today it is run by his nephew Vittorio Piozzo di Rosignano Rossi di Medelana.

In the vineyard

The Cabernet Sauvignon grows in the Lupicaia vineyard, the estate's best site: south-facing and lined with rows of eucalyptus. The Petit Verdot comes from the Addis plot. The old plantings have 3,600 vines per hectare, the younger ones 5,600.

In the cellar

The grapes are hand-picked, sorted at the sorting table, and carefully destemmed and pressed without damaging the berry skins. Fermentation takes place in open stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature, about 20 days on the skins, with daily délestage. Each lot then ages separately for about 22 months in French oak tonneaux of first and second fill. Only then is the blend made, and before sale the wine rests a while longer in bottle.

At the table

A wine for big occasions: with grilled meats and roasts, with braised dishes with mushrooms, or with oven-roasted game. Open it ahead of time or decant it, and serve at 16 to 18 °C (61 to 64 °F). A wine for cellaring and slow enjoyment.
