Sassicaia 2021

In all of Italy, there is only one designation of origin reserved for a single wine: Bolgheri Sassicaia DOC. This one.

Sassicaia was the first of the Super Tuscans, the wine that put Bolgheri on the world's wine map. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, grown on the Tuscan coast.

In the glass, a deep, dark ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and blackberry, along with Mediterranean macchia, mentholated lavender, cocoa, tobacco, and sweet spices. On the palate, balanced, full-bodied, and elegant: soft, polished tannins, supported by pleasant freshness and a very long finish.

The Winery

Sassicaia comes from Tenuta San Guido in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast. The 2022 vintage owes its rare balance of freshness and acidity to the special microclimate of the coast, which provides tension in the glass even in a warm year.

In the vineyard

The soils are calcareous and rich in galestro, stones, and pebbles, with some clay. The wine takes its name from these stones: Sassicaia, the place of many stones.

In the cellar

The mash remains in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 13 to 18 days. Afterward, the wine ages for approximately 24 months in French oak barriques, both new and second and third-use. Before release, it rests for at least three months in the bottle.

At the table

A wine for grand occasions: with game such as wild boar or deer, with grilled or braised beef, and with aged cheeses. Open or decant in good time and serve at 18 to 20 degrees. With proper storage, it will continue to mature for decades.
